Tips for Preparing Kids for a Family Photo Session

If you are worried about how your kids are going to behave during family photos, you are definitely not alone!

Honestly, almost every parent says some version of:

"They never sit still."

Or:

"I am worried they are going to be wild."

The good news is they do not need to sit still. The best family photos usually happen when kids are being themselves anyway.

Do not put too much pressure on it

This is probably the biggest thing.

Kids pick up on stress fast. If the session feels like a big event where they need to perform perfectly, everyone usually ends up more tense.

The goal is not perfect behaviour.

The goal is connection, movement, and real moments together.

Keep the day as relaxed as possible

Try not to stack too much before your session if you can help it.

Tired, rushed, overstimulated kids usually hit their limit pretty fast.

A slower day beforehand makes a huge difference.

Snacks also help more than most people realize.

Talk about it positively

Instead of saying:

"Please behave for photos."

Try something more like:

"We are going to hang out at the beach and play for a bit."

That shift alone changes the energy completely.

Let kids be kids

Some kids are quiet at first. Some run immediately. Some want absolutely nothing to do with photos for the first ten minutes.

All normal.

I work with their energy instead of trying to force them into perfect poses the whole time.

A lot of the best moments happen in between everything anyway.

Do not stress about constant smiling

Realistically, most kids are not going to stare at the camera smiling for an entire session.

And honestly, that is not usually what makes the best photos.

The laughing, movement, curiosity, cuddles, and little interactions are what people end up loving most.

Bring comfort items if needed

For younger kids especially, having something familiar nearby can help a lot.

That could be:

  • a favourite snack
  • a small toy
  • a blanket
  • whatever helps them feel comfortable

Trust the process

This part matters.

Sometimes sessions feel a bit chaotic while they are happening, especially with younger kids.

That does not mean the photos are not working.

What feels busy in real life often photographs beautifully because those moments are real.

Final thoughts

Your kids do not need to be perfect for your photos to turn out beautifully. They just need space to be themselves. That is where the real moments happen, and those are usually the ones that end up meaning the most later.

If you are planning a family photo session on Vancouver Island and feeling anxious about how your kids will do, that is completely normal. I am there to guide things gently and keep the experience as relaxed as possible for EVERYONE involved. It's okay mom, it'll be awesome!
