Mother’s Day Photography Sessions at Rathtrevor Beach

I think one of the reasons motherhood sessions feel so emotional is because moms are almost never in the photos.

At least not properly.

Usually they are the ones fixing hair, packing snacks, wiping faces, carrying everyone’s things, and taking the pictures while everyone else exists inside the memories.

So these sessions felt really special from the beginning.

This Mother’s Day setup took place in the forest at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park with soft pink flowers, a peacock chair tucked into the trees, and the kind of calm evening light that makes everything feel a little slower in the best way.

Honestly, once the kids arrived, most of them immediately climbed into their moms’ laps without any prompting from me anyway.

Which is usually how you know the good moments are about to happen.

Not overly posed. Not rushed.

I really did not want these to feel like stiff mini sessions where everyone lines up, smiles at the camera for five minutes, and leaves feeling stressed. The whole goal was for the experience to feel soft and relaxed. Kids moved around, Moms cuddled their babies. Some kids wanted to sit still for two seconds and others absolutely did not.

And honestly, that is what made the sessions feel real.

Some of my favourite moments were the in between ones that nobody planned. Tiny hands playing with flowers. Kids leaning fully into their moms without thinking about it. That is the kind of thing people actually remember later.

The part moms rarely see

One thing I notice all the time is how often moms are missing from family photos completely.

Not intentionally. Just because they are usually the ones taking them.

Which is part of why I think sessions like these matter so much. They preserve the quieter parts of motherhood that are easy to overlook while you are living inside them every day. The way your child reaches for you automatically. The way they fit against your shoulder right now. The stage where they still want to be held close. Those things change so much faster than people expect.

Rathtrevor was the perfect setting for this

The forest areas around Rathtrevor worked so beautifully for these sessions. Everything felt soft and calm without needing a huge elaborate setup. Just filtered light through the trees, warm tones, pink florals, and enough space for families to settle in naturally. Nothing felt overly styled or disconnected from the environment, it still felt like Vancouver Island. Just with a little extra softness woven in.

That is really what matters most

At the end of the day, the flowers and setup were beautiful, but they were never the most important part.

The important part was preserving connection. The closeness. The comfort.

The way kids naturally melt into their moms when they feel safe. Those are the photographs that become more meaningful every year.

Not because they were perfect, but because they were real.

If you are looking for motherhood or family photography on Vancouver Island that feels relaxed, emotional, and natural, I would love to create something meaningful with you.
