Some sessions are just soft and easy from the start.
This mother and daughter session at Neck Point Park in Nanaimo was exactly that. No pressure, no overthinking, just time together by the ocean while the light shifted through the evening.
A Simple Kind of Session
With sessions like this, the goal is usually pretty straightforward. Keep things relaxed and let the connection lead the way.
We spent most of the time walking along the shoreline, stopping whenever it felt natural. A lot of laughing, a lot of small in-between moments, and plenty of space for things to unfold without forcing anything.
Honestly, those are the sessions that usually end up feeling the most real later on.
Letting Kids Just Be Kids
Even in a mother and daughter session, I never expect things to stay still for long.
There was movement the whole time. Running, cuddling, stopping to look at waves, then running again. That back and forth is completely normal, and it is usually where the best moments happen.
The more relaxed everyone is, the more natural the photos feel. 🌊🌲
Why Neck Point Park Works So Well
Neck Point Park is one of those places that just makes sessions easy.
You get ocean views, rocky bluffs, trees, and soft coastal light all within a short walk. It never feels overly structured, which is perfect for family sessions where you want things to feel natural instead of posed.
Nanaimo itself is also a really interesting place geographically. The park sits on the unceded traditional territories of the Snuneymuxw First Nation (snʊˈneɪməxʷ), and when you look out across the Strait of Georgia, you are seeing part of the Salish Sea.
On a clear day, the view stretches far. The Howe Sound islands and fjords sit in the distance, along with the Sunshine Coast. Beyond that, the North Shore Mountains rise up along the mainland, part of the larger Pacific Ranges within the Coast Mountains. Sometimes you can even pick out The Lions, known in Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) as Ch’ich’iyúy Elxwíkn, two distinct peaks that stand out sharply on the skyline.
It is one of those views that quietly reminds you how layered and connected this coastline really is.

The Light Makes a Difference
We timed this session for later in the day when the light starts to soften.
That warm glow along the coast near sunset changes everything. It wraps around people in a really natural way and takes away any harshness from the scene.
Nothing about it feels forced. It just works with whatever is happening in front of the camera.
What These Sessions Are Really About
At the end of the day, this kind of photography is not really about posing or perfect locations.
It is about documenting a stage of life that moves quickly. The way a child still reaches for their parent’s hand. The way they laugh together over something small. The way everything feels a little more simple when you are just present with each other.
Those are the parts that tend to matter most later on.
