Oyster River Nature Park

Black Creek, Vancouver Island

Rugged Vancouver Island

There is something really special about photographing families who genuinely enjoy being around each other.

This session at Oyster River Nature Park felt relaxed from the very beginning. No pressure, no stiff posing, just everyone spending time together in one of the prettiest spots on Vancouver Island.

A Quiet Spot in Black Creek

If you have never been to Oyster River Nature Park, it is tucked away near Black Creek between Campbell River and Courtenay.

It has a little bit of everything that works beautifully for family photos. Forest trails, river views, soft light through the trees, and that calm Vancouver Island feeling that makes people slow down a bit without even realizing it.

It is one of those locations that never feels overly busy or rushed, which is especially nice for larger family sessions.

Photographing Adult Families Feels Different

Sessions with adult children have a completely different rhythm compared to sessions with little kids.

Everything moves a little slower. People settle in quicker. Conversations happen naturally between photos, and there is usually a lot of teasing and laughing once everyone relaxes.

This family made my job easy.

You could tell right away how close they all are. The kind of family that genuinely likes spending time together. Parents still looking at their kids with so much pride, siblings joking with each other nonstop, spouses fitting right into the chaos.

Honestly, those are the moments I pay the most attention to during a session.

Letting Things Stay Natural

We started with a few classic group photos, then spent the rest of the session wandering through the trails and stopping whenever the light or scenery felt right.

Nothing overly complicated.

One thing I have learned over the years is that people photograph better when they are not overthinking every little thing. I give direction when needed, but I also leave room for people to interact naturally instead of trying to control every moment.

The best photos usually happen during the in-between parts anyway.

Why Oyster River Nature Park Works So Well for Family Photos

Oyster River Nature Park is one of my favourite locations for Vancouver Island family photography because it feels quiet and grounded.

The river adds movement and texture without taking over the whole session, and the forest trails photograph beautifully year-round. It works especially well for families who want nature in their photos without needing a long hike or a huge production.

And for larger family groups, there is enough variety nearby to keep things moving without constantly relocating.

Little Moments

One of the highlights of the session was witnessing the parents' overwhelming joy as they looked at their kids. Their smiles said it all – they were bursting with pride for the incredible individuals their kids had become. It was truly a heartwarming moment to capture those emotions in photographs.

Flora + Fauna

As we explored the location, I couldn't help but be amazed by the island's vibrant flora and fauna. Vancouver Island is home to diverse ecosystems, including temperate rainforests and a variety of wildlife.

Love & Affection

We wrapped up the session with some intimate shots that showcased the deep love and affection within the family. The beautiful light added an extra touch of magic to the photographs, making them even more special.
