Best Beach for Family Photos: Parksville or Qualicum Beach?
One of the questions I get pretty often is whether Parksville or Qualicum Beach is better for family photos.
The honest answer is that both are beautiful. It mostly comes down to the kind of feel you want for your session.
They each have a slightly different vibe, and sometimes one fits a family better than the other.
Parksville family photos
Parksville tends to feel a little more open and expansive, especially around Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park.
At low tide, the beach stretches out forever, which gives kids tons of space to run around and explore.
It is usually my go to if you want:
- wide open beach
- soft sunset reflections
- lots of movement
- a relaxed barefoot beach feel
It works especially well for younger kids because there is room to move without everything feeling crowded.
The overall feel is bright, airy, and very west coast.
Qualicum Beach family photos
Qualicum Beach tends to feel a little quieter and calmer overall.
The beaches are often less busy, and the area has a slightly slower pace to it.
You still get beautiful coastal scenery, but it can feel a bit more intimate and relaxed depending on the exact location.
Qualicum is usually a good fit if you want:
- a quieter atmosphere
- softer coastal scenery
- less busy beaches
- a slower paced feel
It is especially nice for families who want things to feel really laid back and low pressure.
Which one is better for sunset?
Honestly, both photograph beautifully in the evening.
Parksville often gives you more dramatic open sky and reflections during low tide.
Qualicum tends to feel softer and calmer overall.
But both beaches are east facing, so if you want those cotton candy skies, lets go for a sunrise shoot! You really cannot go wrong with either.
What matters more than the location
Honestly, the location is only a small part of what makes photos feel meaningful.
The bigger difference usually comes from:
- your family dynamic
- the light that evening
- how relaxed everyone feels
- the little moments that happen naturally during the session
A beautiful location helps, but connection matters way more.
