What are the best places for family photos in Parksville BC?
If you’re trying to figure out where to do your family photos in Parksville, you’re not alone. It’s one of the first things people ask me.
And honestly, not every location around here photographs well.
So instead of giving you a huge list of random spots, I’m going to share the places I actually use. These are the ones I know work and give you that relaxed, natural feel most families are looking for.
Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park
This is the main one.
If you’ve seen my work, there’s a good chance it was taken here.
At low tide, the beach opens up forever. You get soft sand, shallow water, and tons of space for kids to just run around.
It’s simple, it’s beautiful, and it works every time.
Best for
That classic beachy, barefoot, sunset kind of session
French Creek Beach
This spot is quieter and a bit more tucked away.
There’s a mix of textures here. Driftwood, rocks, and softer edges that add some variety without feeling busy.
It’s not as open as Rathtrevor, but that can actually be a good thing depending on what you want.
Best for
Smaller families or something a bit more low key
Little Mountain
If you want some drama with one heck of a view, this is where to go.
You get an open panoramic vista, arbutus trees, and a completely different look from the ocean.
Not advised for young children or dogs as it's a sheer 100m CLIFF and can be dangerous.
Best for
Adults wanting a breathtaking, scenic backdrop. Perfect for sunset or sunrise
Top Bridge
This one has more of a forest and river feel.
There’s more shade, which means softer light earlier in the day and less pressure to shoot right at sunset.
It’s not as bright as the beach, but it has a calm, grounded look that works really well.
Best for
Families who like trees, trails, and a more earthy feel
Englishman River Estuary
This is kind of a mix between beach and something more natural.
You get grasses, water, and with a less open space.
It still feels coastal, but not as wide and open as Rathtrevor.
Best for
A quieter coastal option with a bit more texture
How to choose
You really don’t need to overthink this.
All of these locations work. It mostly comes down to what kind of look you like and how your kids tend to be. Some kids want to run everywhere. Some stay close. That actually matters more than the location.
If you’re not sure, I’ll help you choose based on what will work best for your family.
A quick note about timing
Light matters more than location.
Evenings usually give you softer light, less squinting, and a nicer overall look.
That said, we can work around naps and real life. That is usually the bigger priority.
Parksville is one of the main areas I work in, but I also shoot throughout surrounding Vancouver Island communities. You can see a full breakdown of all locations here: Vancouver Island Family Photography Locations
Final thoughts
The location is just the backdrop.
What actually matters is how your family interacts. Kids running around, laughing, doing their own thing. That is what makes the photos feel real.
If you’re planning a session in Parksville and aren’t sure where to go, I’m always happy to help you figure it out.
