Wondering what to wear for beach family photos?

If you're planning family photos and already stressing about outfits, you're not alone.

This is easily the most common question I get.

And I get it. You want everything to look good without it turning into a whole thing.

The good news is, it's actually way simpler than it feels.

Start simple

You don't need perfect outfits. You don't need everyone matching.

And you definitely don't need to go buy a whole new wardrobe!!!

Most of the time, simple and comfortable looks better than anything overly styled.

If you feel like yourself, it shows in the photos.

Stick to soft, neutral tones

For beach sessions, softer colours almost always work best.

Think:

  • light blues
  • pale pinks
  • sage greens
  • creamy whites
  • soft tans

These tones work with the beach instead of competing with it.

Bright coluors and heavy patterns can pull attention away from your faces, which is not what you want.

Coordinate, don't match

Matching outfits used to be a thing, but it tends to look a bit forced now.

Instead, aim for colours that work well together.

For example:

  • one person in light beige
  • one in soft blue
  • one in something terracotta

It should feel balanced, not identical.

Think about movement

The beach has natural movement. Wind, water, kids running around.

Outfits that move with that tend to look the best.

Things like:

  • flowy dresses
  • loose shirts
  • soft fabrics

They add a bit of life to your photos without you having to do anything.

Keep it comfortable

This matters more than people think.

If something feels stiff, tight, or awkward, you'll notice it in the photos.

Especially with kids.

What to avoid

A few things that don't photograph as well:

  • large logos
  • super bright neon colours
  • heavy patterns
  • anything you have to constantly adjust

If you're unsure about something, it's probably safer to keep it simple.

Real life note

I've had families show up feeling like their outfits weren't "perfect" and the photos still turned out amazing. What actually matters is how you interact with each other. Honestly, slightly mismatched but relaxed outfits almost always look better than perfectly coordinated ones anyways!

The laughing, the chaos, the in-between moments.

That's the part you can't plan, and it's always the best part.

If you're still unsure, you don't have to figure it out on your own. If you book a session with me, I'm always happy to help you plan outfits or look over what you're thinking.

Sometimes a quick message is all it takes to make you feel way more confident going into it.

Final thoughts

You don't need perfect outfits for good photos. You just need to feel comfortable enough to relax and be yourselves. Everything else falls into place from there.
